More than a blog, COGnitions™ is an ongoing initiative to learn from current innovators and gurus affecting the packaging design-to-print supply chain. You’ll find what’s coming up and an archive of past reports from the field as well as events involving Cog locally…all written in the lively Cog style, so you don’t fall asleep.
Please note: We believe in full transparency, so please understand that any ticket costs attached to a COGnitions™ event go to fund the event, not to send the Cogs on Caribbean cruises.
Be sure to save the date for any of the following that interest you. All events, dates, and times will be kept up to date.
Smelt Fry 2019
October 17, 2019 | Cincinnati, OH
What started out as a way to showcase paper offerings to the creative community has become one of the largest events in the industry and an iconic event for the Cincinnati Graphic Arts Community. The Smelt Fry is the hottest ticket among Cincinnati agencies, designers, and printers.
The Smelt Fry’s history began in the 1980’s and was held in the parking lot of Johnston Paper. The local paper merchant wanted to host an event for the creative community. The vision was for a gathering of creatives to meet and see what was new in print and paper. Increasing attendance forced it to move to the art deco, Netherland Hilton Hall of Mirrors. Over the years, the Smelt Fry has grown to iconic status. It is one of the largest and longest running annual paper shows in the industry. The event changed venues in 2017 and moved to Paul Brown Stadium where there is plenty of room to accommodate the ever-growing list of attendees from the print and design community.
This year’s show will feature a breakout session, “Hands On, Brand On — Using print + digital technology to create a better overall brand-on experience for customers.” Plus, attendees can try their hand at screen printing and creating their own unique Make & Take keepsake print. And, if that wasn’t enough, the Smelt Fry will be packed with the best paper, packaging, and wide format samples around.
Tom Newmaster’s Packaging Design Class at the PCA&D
October 18 | Lancaster, PA
Cog’s Lindsey Frimming is back in the spotlight. Not only have we just announced her new status as partner and Chief Innovation Officer at Cog, she has been invited by the redoubtable Tom Newmaster of FORCE pkg, Inc. to be a guest instructor. Lindsey will work with his packaging design students at the Pennsylvania College of Art & Design in Lancaster, PA. Tom wants the class to tap her insights into the business-building potential of award-winning decoration, namely fancy substrates and embellishments that turn packages into works of commercial art. Lindsey is a great choice, Tom. The Force is strong with this one. Thanks!
Printing United 2019
October 23-25 | Dallas, TX
We have our Cog compass set for the brand-new trade show from Printing United. Unlike past shows, this relaunched event will try to answer a strategic need for a single industry exhibition that puts access to all printing technologies under one roof. Mark Lackey (Chief Operations Officer) and Lindsey Frimming (Chief Innovations Officer) will attend and seek out major educational and networking opportunities for us and probably you. Printing United will use the show to continue sharing the latest solutions for apparel, graphics/wide-format and functional printing applications, while also extending into the commercial, packaging, and in-plant printing segments. They bill the show as “a window to view the future of the printing industry.” If the winds are favorable, we’ll be there to see what the future of the industry looks like, and whether there are any killer robots or giant, mutant ants to worry about. Check out Cognitions™ on our website after the show, and we’ll let you know.

Cog, LLC invites you to an evening of stories about redefining your business self. Each of our powerhouse panelists from the packaging design-to-print supply chain has gone through a journey of self-discovery and come back with gifts to share with their teams for the betterment of the company.
Identifying our personal gifts and creating the space for others to contribute their gifts are two of the most valuable skills we have to take our businesses to the next level—and they take a lifetime to cultivate: Sometimes we don’t know how to employ our gifts in the system we operate, and sometimes our gifts aren’t valued by those we work with. Our panelists will discuss how they each overcame these challenges.
Essentially, theirs the lesson of replacing EGO with WE GO. You'll be invited to join in as the discussion gets rolling. Come alone or with colleagues, and of course, with plenty of curiosity. You might just walk away realizing how valuable your own story is.
Hosted by Lindsey Frimming, Cog, LLC
Moderated by Katie Kinnemeyer, White Paw Ventures
